Demystifying Growth Marketing

Growth marketing is a holistic and iterative approach that uses experimentation and data analysis to drive customer and revenue growth. Unlike traditional marketing, which often follows a linear path, growth marketing is a full-funnel and multi-channel approach that thrives on agility, adaptability, and a deep understanding of consumer behavior.

A brief history of marketing and media

When I started out as a TV media buyer (I’m showing my age), all that mattered was reach, frequency, and “points” – an archaic calculation used to determine the overall weight of media in the market. Our research was done on the front end, using CPP (cost per point) to determine the most efficient placements to reach our target audience.  We didn’t really come back to performance until it was time to reconcile logs and invoices. It was a bit of a set-it-and-forget-it method focused on the top of the sales funnel and brand awareness. Don’t get me wrong, the top of the sales funnel and brand awareness are incredibly important, but they represent only a sliver of growth marketing strategy.

We’ve seen the light (and the power of real-time data analytics)

At the heart of growth marketing lies data. Growth marketers employ data analytics to gain insights into customer behavior, preferences, and pain points. This data-driven approach ensures that strategies are based on real-time feedback that allows for constant optimization, ultimately increasing the chance of success.

How do we get all that data? We experiment – so much so that we may as well wear lab coats. Hyperbole aside, we constantly hypothesize, test, and refine different strategies, channels, and messages to identify what resonates best with our target audience. Through this iterative process of trial and error, we tease out the most impactful techniques while optimizing marketing spend.

Lastly, growth marketing leverages a mix of online and offline channels that span the entire customer journey. From initial awareness to conversion and beyond, growth marketers create tailored experiences that address prospects' needs at each stage. This omnichannel strategy ensures maximum visibility and engagement, no matter where customers are in their journey.
